Extensive Green Roofs are designed to be low maintenance, lightweight systems, often with limited access to allow for inspections and maintenance. Extensive Green Roofs are mainly installed to increase local bio-diversity by providing additional habitat for plants and wildlife. Furthermore, an Extensive Green Roof is a nature based SuDS solution (Sustainable Urban Drainage System) because Green Roofs intercept rain water, which can be slowly released through evaporation and plant uptake. Should excess water need to be directed to an outlet, this will be at a much slower rate than would be possible with an impervious roof surface.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN EXTENSIVE & BIO DIVERSE GREEN ROOFBoth Extensive and Bio Diverse Green Roofs are low maintenance green roof spaces, which are created to provide habitat for plants and wildlife and are generally not designed as leisure spaces. A Bio Diverse Green Roof is designed specifically to recreate the loss of habitat for plants and wildlife that existed prior to a building being erected. In reality a Bio Diverse design, due to weight loadings, cannot always incorporate a similar type of soil that can be found at ground level. In this situation, the design becomes about maximising the bio-diversity of the green roof by importing substrates at different depths and incorporating habitat features such as logs and rock piles.

Each of our materials is regularly tested including their bulk densities and can therefore be considered for any planting situation where bulk density and point loadings are of importance. Furthermore, our multi-lift bags and fleet of specialised delivery vehicles are all accepted on schemes where bags are to be craned directly from the vehicle to the roof garden.
